To help prevent motorcycle accidents, we encourage both motorcyclists and automobile drivers to ride responsibly and respectfully.

Tips for drivers:
  • Give extra space when passing a motorcycle: Allow at least three seconds following distance when you’re behind a motorcycle.
  • Scan intersections: As with other vulnerable road users, most car crashes involving motorcycles happen in intersections. Drivers need to look out for motorcycles – especially when turning left – they can be harder to see and it can be tough to judge how fast they’re traveling.
  • Stay focused and keep your eyes on the road:  leave your phone alone, quit fiddling with the radio, stop eating your lunch or playing with the kids.  It’s safer for you and for me.
  • Share the road with motorcycles: If in doubt about who has the right-of-way, yield to the motorcycle.
Tips for riders:

  • Wear all the gear, all the time (ATGATT), especially DOT, Snell or ECE safety helmets.  It may save your life one day.
  • Be seen. Wear bright colors and reflective materials,  Add more neon lights to your bike.
  • Be heard.  Loud pipes and using your horn alerts distracted drivers.
  • Try to avoid riding at night.
  • Never drink and ride.
  • Maneuver intersections safely, especially where oncoming traffic is waiting to turn left.
  • Stay out of drivers’ blind spots and never assume they have seen you.

There are a lot of texting teenagers, oblivious knuckleheads and inattentive daydreamers on the roads these days so it’s more important than ever to be more aware of your surroundings.
